The Vietnam War started on November 1, 1955 and was fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by communist allies, where as, South Vietnam was allies with the United States and other anti-communist countries. The US government viewed involvement in the war as a way to prevent communism takeover of South Vietnam as a part of their wider strategy of containment. The North Vietnamese were fighting to reunify Vietnam under communist rule. US combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Operations spanned international borders, with Laos and Cambodia heavily bombed. American involvement peaked in 1968, at the time of the Tet Offensive. After this, US ground forces were gradually withdrawn as a part of a policy known as Vietnamization. US military involvement ended on August 15, 1973 as a result of the Case-Church Amendment passed by the US congress. The capture of Saigon by the Vietnam People's Army in April 1975 marked the end of the war. North and South Vietnam were reunified the next year. Estimated Vietnamese soldiers and civilians range from 880,000 to 3.1 million, some 200,000 to 300,000 Cambodians, 20,000 to 200,000 Laotians and 58,220 US service members died in combat.
